Religious Sigs over on HCRealms

Word on the street (read: I heard from nedleeds) is that this is the place to vent your fustrations about HCRealms. Well, I have one that's been bugging me for awhile now:

Religious Sigs

You've seen them, I'm sure. I'll point out one of the ones I see most often "John 3:16 In the Kingdom of heaven, the only use for numbers is in games". There's another one talking about how the person behind the sig didn't die when he was shot and it's a miracle then praises Jesus. Lately there's been a spate of people who ask a question and end with "thanks and God bless".

I go to that site to talk about Heroclix, see previews, and what not. I'm NOT there to be preached to. If God, Jesus, Allah, The Flying Spagetti Monster, or whatever is important to you, that's cool, but I don't need or want to hear about it. I'm not trying to convert you, so why are you throwing that John 3:16 crap at me. Did you play the Jesus Of Nazareth LE against the Ultimate Iron Man from Avengers and win? Tell me about that. Otherwise, take it outside, godboy.

Religious discussions are definately unwelcome over on the board, so why aren't religious sigs. I've been annoyed about this since way back when they stripped Gacy's Clown of his name because someone found it offensive. Yeah, well, I find religious sigs offensive so how about making them change those?

You could report them to mods? They technically arent allowed, Ie one of the taboos there ; Sex, Drugs, Religion.

It would be like saying in your sig "Man, Im glad Im high right now" or "I eat pussy"

I personally dont like religious stuff being shoved in my face either. But yeah, I think you should report them.

If I get warning points for making a gag about how the DCU is lamer than Harry Potter (In re of Zatanna saying spells backwards) Im sure their own rules will be enforced if you point them out.

The sigs really don't bother me personally, but I can see why they can be annoying. I mean, if a person is Jewish, then they probably don't want to see messages like: "Jesus Christ is the son of God, and there's no way to Heaven except through him." A simple sentence like that is the literary equivalent to shitting on the entire religion as a whole. I mean, if a member put a passage from the satanic bible in their sig, it would be asked to be removed immediately.

The certainly don't have a sense of religious freedom over there, mostly because the topic is taboo as a whole. I think the mods don't enforce the rules on scripture in sigs because they believe that it won't offend anyone, and therefore perceived as harmless. If you message a mod telling them your grievance in a mature, intellectual way, I'm sure they'll be accommodating. I'm also sure that there would be a backlash from those with the religious sigs claiming that whoever complained is a heretic. So, if you are legitimately bothered enough by this, by all means, call them on their own bullshit. Personally, I don’t think it’s worth the hassle.

I'm Stephen -- rottgutt on HCRealms as well. I'm a friend of Sean's (nedleeds). We occasionally play at the same venue. I was one of the guys who drove up to Gen Con with him this past week. It was actually on the ride back that he mentioned this site and yesterday I checked out his thread about being banned, so I figured I'd blow off some steam about the religious sigs here. This place seems very open to being able to voice your opinion with no fear of mod repercussions and I'm sorry to say I just don't feel like that's the case on HCRealms.

EXACTLY!

My big question is if you put a satanic passage (figuring nothing otherwise offensive such as language) as your sig, would they ask you to remove it or warn you or ban you outright? I understand that I don't know everything that transpires when someone gets banned or warned, but from the outside it seems pretty arbitrary. And pretty prevalent.

I completely agree. It annoys me but not to the level that I feel like it's invasive. If someone told me in a post I needed to find Jesus, I'd report their ass, but otherwise it's just sort of a background thing that doesn't come up too often. That said, it's still nice to actually be able to post about it somewhere.

I agree with charaxes that's it's probably not worth the overall effort. Well, unless as stated before, I get directly preached at.

I'm over it, since I think religion is great if you are into it, and aren't crazy/try and force it on me.

It's not really forcing it on you, but you if you feel strongly about it, talk to a mod.

I don't think they should get reported for something like that. I don't go on the realms to read about religion, but I also don't go on their to read vanity quotes and links to internet fads. I don't see the big deal in just chilling out about sigs. Hell, if they really bother you, I'm pretty sure you can turn them off in the user CP.

Good point. I'm pretty sure that you can turn off signatures with the Control Panel, so I'm sure if you complain to a mod, that's what they'll tell you what to do.

I dunno. I remember seeing a mod with something disparaging about Scientology in the sig, and told them in PM that it made me a sad panda, and they got rid of it right away. From my experience, if someone seems -genuinely- offended about anything, they're happy to try and alleviate the problem.

The guy who got shot in the face doesn't seem very offensive to me. There's a difference between quoting scripture and just how people talk. I don't get offended when people say "God Bless You," because to them it's the nicest thing they can think to say. You don't have to agree with their belief, since they're not asking you to. They just want nice things to happen to you.

The face-shot-guy's religious banter I wrote off as the same as someone saying "Thank God" when their house isn't blown away in a hurricane. It's just what folks say.

And I say this as someone who through a big gulp at a guy who wished me a Merry Christmas.
