Okay, so a few days after I got back home from College, an old friend of mine IM's me, and we get talking. This guy, I've known him since Kindergarten. Not stupid by any means, but always has been a little odd.
So, he's taking classes at a community college, and he hates it. He kinda has the attitude that the people and professors there aren't worth his time. He's trying to transfer over to a full time university, a big one. They didn't like his High School Grades, and they didn't like his musical audition, and he's waiting to hear back about what they think of his comm-college grades (which are decent). So, while we're discussing this, he says something that really grinds my gears, y'know?
"I feel like the system is failing me, man."
When he said this, I wanted to walk over to his house (something I'm more than capable of doing), politely ring the doorbell, and then smack him upside the head. This guy didn't want to work hard in high school. Whenever there was a math test or anything he didn't feel like doing, he'd say he had a headache, and just not do it. If the teachers fail him, his mom complained that they weren't meeting his needs or something.
I know what you're thinking. "But JK, what if he legitimately was feeling sick for each and every test?" Let me tell you something. I have a headache twenty-four seven, 365.25. If it flared up badly during a test, I would think to myself, "Gee, this sucks," and then finish the damn test! I did my work, I worked hard, and got excellent grades to get into a good school. And then we have these guys who laze about and then complain that "the system is failing." Jesus H. Christ!
And since I don't have a dorm full of people to distract me, this got me thinking. Throughout high school, I took a lot of advanced classes. And yet, when people complained, they didn't usually say that it was because the class was hard. It was usually complaints about "so and so being unfair," or something like that. Really? I didn't have too many problems with that. "Oh, but you're the infallible JK." Bullshit! I ain't all that special. I'm just a dude. Hell, I have a permanent headache that should be slowing me down. You should have a leg up on me.
One excellent example, one of my high school friens was worried about getting a C in English, and it bringing down his GPA. He cited that the teacher wasn't being fair. Really? Ever consider TURNING IN YOUR WORK? My God Man! There's a novel idea!
So what's the point of this rant? The system ain't always perfect, but before you start complaining about how some class is unfair, maybe you should take a good, long look in the mirror.
Or maybe the point of this is that I shouldn't be allowed to spend too much time away from funny people.
