I'd prefer if it was The Phelps Family.

The only reason that Imus pisses me off is because he hasn't apologized.
I understand that what he said was insensitive to both women and African-Americans, but I have heard people say a lot worse, and not get in trouble. I'm not condoning what he said, by any means, but I do think that people are blowing it out of proportion.
I don't buy his defense; that it was a joke, so he shouldn't apologize for the remark. You should something insensitive, and people took offense to it. Whether you were joking or not doesn't matter. Saying that you want to commit a hate crime, then say "Oh, I'm just kidding. I'd never actually do it" just to cover your ass still isn't acceptable. He should have gone on record, as soon as people started talking about it, that the remarks were meant in jest, he never wanted to offend anyone, and that he's sorry that he did. If he would have said something like that in the beginning, this whole would have gone away, and we wouldn't even still be talking about it. Him refusing to apologize just reinforces the idea that he is racist and sexist, whether he is not.
I feel like I'm leaving something out... I'll add it if I think about it again.
/Edit: I remember what I was going to say: he has freedom of speech rights, anyway. Those laws are in place to protect speech that others might find offensive. I mean, no one needs to protect the rights of language that no one would be offended by. If no one could be offended by the language you're using, then no one will complain about it. Well, you can see where I'm going with this. I do agree that we should use free speech responiblily, but you don't have the right to shut up someone just because you don't like what they say.
The only joke guaranteed not to offend anyone is: "A person went into a place and did something. There, that's it."
So, in short: I think that Imus is an asshole for not apologizing whenhe obviously saying something he shouldn't. But mostly, I think everyone needs to chill out.

I'd prefer if it was The Phelps Family. If you're talking about Fred Phelps, then I second the nomination. That guy is a Grade A Douchebag.

I dunno. "Phelps" is a fairly common name in the States, and I really didn't know if Europeans know who Fred Phelps even is.
As for Fred Phelps, he came to my hometown once. Matthew Shepard's mom came to my university to give a speech, and Phelps was there with his "Your son is burning in Hell" signs.
Like I said before, he's a Grade A Douchebag.

I knew of him from a day when I just looked at random stuff on Wikipedia, and Louis Theroux did a documentary where he lived with them for 3 weeks, and the was shown last week/2 weeks ago.

I think its just a tad too far when they are using a man who was beaten to death as part of their propoganda.
It wouldn't be as bad if they weren't advocating violence.
But the thing is, at the end of the day, as long as they remain a minority they can't do anything big. I mean if they start killing people they'll b arrested, so you can get over them.

They'd be arrested in britain for disturbing the peace.
It doesn't mattter how far away they are from funerals, they're still hobags.
What was really interesting was this one girl (a granddaughter of Fred), who was the one "looking after" the documentary guy. He kept asking her questions that she found uncormfortable (normal for us) like did she fancy anyone in her class, and at the end we can assume she had done something "bad" in the past. By bad it'll have been like gone out with someone, or drank alcohol.
But it was like all her normality had been taken away.

I hate consititutions sometimes.
The Brittish Constitution isnt really real/ I don't really know so don't quote me.
Like the Queen is only there for fun, like she could say that she didnt want a certain type of government, but everyone would just look at her as if to say "Who are you?" and then do it anyway.
We would just arrest Fred Phelps over here, and then let him out on bail 18 months later and say that if he ever spreads crap again he would be arrested for longer.
