WELL.
Rectum is the supine stem of rego; I rule, in latin. This is the part of the verb most words are derived from. I rule is most commonly used to mean I rule a country, but can also mean I rule a straight line (like with a ruler). Because the rectum is the only straight part of the digestive system, it was given the name Rectum.
See I did learn something after doing 4 years of Latin.
